HEMIPLEGIA
Hemiplegia is a pathology which causes the paralysis of a hemibody following contralateral lesion of the pyramidal tract in the brain.
Hemiplegia is the consequence of stroke.
As a reminder, the brain is divided into 2 cerebral hemispheres (right and left), the right part of the brain controls the left hemibody while the left part of the brain controls the right hemibody.
In addition to motor skills (movement), the brain controls very complex functions such as language, memory, emotions, etc.
Thus, the hemiplegic patient presents, in addition to motor skills disorders, language disorders, memory, attention, emotionality, learning, etc.
Physiotherapy rehabilitation for hemiplegia begins in the hospital in cooperation with the Occupational Therapist and continues in the office or at home in Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy.
In the office, depending on the recovery obtained upon discharge from the hospital, the physiotherapist is required to rehabilitate walking (with a tripod cane, then without) and impaired motor functions.
Rehabilitation of the hemiplegic's hand is also essential.
Through the different exercises offered, the Physiotherapist works indirectly on the cognitive abilities of his patient (attention, memory, etc.) in collaboration with the occupational therapist and the speech therapist.
The pain is frequent in the hemiplegic patient; massages are generally used and are very effective.
